Benefits of Family Time
In this day and age it can be extremely hard to spend quality time as a family. In between work, school, homework, friends and extra curricular activities it can be difficult to squeeze in family time but we all should make a strong effort to make it happen. There are so many reasons why family time is important for all family members, it strengthens the family bond, creates family memories, provides a better understanding of each other and can have a positive impact on a child's development.
Monkey see, monkey do, children learn by example. How you act as a parent in situations impacts how your child will react when they encounter similar situations. Family time allows children to develop parenting skills and stronger communication skills. Children are like sponges, they absorb knowledge and skills from their surroundings. Parents are their first teachers and they pick up skills from parents without even knowing it.
Spending quality time with family members creates a comfortable environment which leads to open communication. Families who are comfortable with each other are more inclined to discuss personal problems and look to one another for support. If a child feels like they can seek advice from a parent they are less likely to develop behavioral problems. As they have developed strong communication skills, they do not have any desire to use violence as a solution.
Family time can also influence a child's academic performance and health. Helping a child with their school work in their child's first academic year has set a positive learning environment for the future. Children feel like they have the support system to help them as they face academic challenges and do not feel ashamed if they need to ask for help. Nutritious family dinners can also have a positive impact on a child's success. A study demonstrated that only 9% of teens who ate dinner frequently with their family did poorly in school.
Studies have also shown that children who eat at least 5 family dinners a week have a much lower chance of smoking cigarettes, taking drugs, and underage drinking. Teens who had less than 3 family dinners were 3.5 times more likely to have used prescription drugs and other drugs than marijuana. These teens were also 2.5 times more likely to smoke cigarettes and 1.5 times more likely to have tried alcohol underage.
Family time not only benefits the kids, but it also positively influences parents as well. In 2008, Bringham Young University conducted a study that revealed that having dinner with family reduced working moms stress.
Spending time with family in a Jacuzzi® brand hot tub is also a great setting for family time. Everyone can soak in the hot tub together and catch up without the distractions of cellphones, TV and the internet. An electronic free zone can keep everyone engaged in what is going on with their family opposed to having their attention focused else where.
