Relaxing in your hot tub can quickly become a crucial part of your daily routine. The get the most out of your hot tub experience, it’s very important that you clean it regularly and ensure the water is safe to use. Untreated or dirty water can lead to skin irritations or bacterial infections, such as folliculitis, known as hot tub rash.
WHAT IS HOT TUB RASH?
Commonly known as hot tub rash, folliculitis is a rather annoying issue that might affect some hot tub users from time to time. Essentially, this condition is easily noticeable due to marks and red spots on the body, which somewhat resemble chickenpox. It’s an inflammation of the hair follicles, caused by bacteria, fungi or yeast, which can form in a hot tub that has not been maintained properly.
SYMPTOMS OF HOT TUB RASH
Children, who usually spend more time in the water or rubbing their skin against surfaces such as water slides or pool toys, are more prone to experiencing hot tub rash. This condition might cause them to feel uncomfortable and have itchy skin, making them want to scratch.
If left alone, the infection will heal much quicker, but as you know, it’s not always easy for a child to avoid scratching their skin. This could result in a longer healing period or a worsening of the infection.
In more extreme cases, if the red dots, which somewhat resemble pimples, should break, they might release puss and blood. When combined with open wounds, folliculitis could pave the way to potentially worse health issues.
In most cases, folliculitis will simply go away on its own with no treatment required. You are just going to have to deal with itchy skin and refrain from scratching for a little while! If you notice any sort of skin irritation or condition forming after exiting your hot tub, you should consult the guidance of a physician. In some cases, antibiotics may be required to help the healing process.
PREVENTION FOR HOT TUB RASH
To prevent hot tub rash, it’s important to keep your hot tub and/or swim spa clean. Don’t shy away from regular spa maintenance routines and always make sure to check the chemistry of your water.
An unbalanced pH or hardness could lead to conditions that promote bacterial growth! It’s also important to keep your filters clean, water chlorinated and system properly treated with spa chemicals, to prevent the formation of moulds, yeasts, fungi, or other impurities.
